A simple promise

Our early SEO offer was deliberately easy to understand: we would get the client onto the first page, or give their money back. It began in the Ananzi era and continued into the earlier years of Google. The promise removed uncertainty for businesses that were still deciding whether the internet deserved part of their marketing budget. Instead of asking a client to trust a mysterious technical process, we attached our fee to a visible result. That willingness to be measured became part of Net Age’s culture.

Confidence came from doing the work

The guarantee was possible because our knowledge came from repeated implementation. We built websites, structured their information, worked with the language of different industries and watched how changes affected visibility. Each project created feedback for the next. Search systems were less complicated, but successful optimisation still required accuracy and judgement. It was possible to make a strong commitment because the important variables were sufficiently understandable and because competition in many categories had not yet reached its present intensity.

A guarantee is not the same as a shortcut

A guarantee can create the wrong incentive if it rewards any ranking regardless of relevance. Our objective was to connect a business with people searching for its products or services, not merely to find an obscure phrase that produced an impressive report. This distinction remains essential. Visibility has commercial value only when the audience, query and destination are aligned. A first-page result that never produces a qualified visitor is not a meaningful return. The best lesson from the guarantee era is accountability, not fixation on a single number.

Why the promise became less defensible

Over time Google introduced more signals, richer result types and greater personalisation. The competitive web expanded, and established brands accumulated authority that could not be reproduced instantly. Algorithm changes could alter results without notice. Location could make one user’s first page different from another’s. The boundaries of what an SEO agency controlled became clearer. Continuing to guarantee a universal position would eventually have meant pretending those realities did not exist, so we changed the promise rather than lower the standard of honesty.

What we still guarantee in practice

Although we no longer promise a fixed organic position, the performance mindset remains. Clients should expect a clear scope, careful diagnosis, prioritised recommendations, implementation where agreed and reporting that distinguishes activity from outcome. They should understand what has changed and why. They should also be told when a technical limitation, content gap or competitive disadvantage makes a goal unrealistic. Accountability now lives in the quality of the process and the evidence of progress rather than in control over an external ranking platform.

A principle carried into AI

AI visibility is currently attracting the same absolute promises once associated with SEO. No company can force every AI system to mention a brand or cite a page. We can, however, strengthen the evidence those systems encounter: clear entities, consistent facts, useful explanations, authoritative supporting information and sound technical access. Our own history makes us cautious about turning an emerging channel into a guaranteed outcome. The technology changes; the need for transparent, defensible marketing does not.

What this means for your business

Our history is not used to suggest that yesterday’s methods should be repeated. It demonstrates that we have been accountable for search outcomes across changing eras and have been willing to change our own offer when the evidence required it. A sensible next step is to examine the current evidence before choosing tactics. That means understanding which pages matter commercially, how people currently discover them, where technical or information gaps exist and what the competitive results actually contain. Priorities should then be documented in plain language and connected to an owner, an expected benefit and a way of checking the outcome. This disciplined approach prevents SEO from becoming a stream of disconnected tasks. It also creates a reliable record of the business, its expertise and its improvements, information that can support traditional rankings, user confidence and emerging AI discovery over time.
