Where our search journey began

Net Age began building and promoting websites in 1997, when commercial internet use in South Africa was still young. Google had not yet launched. Local users often found businesses through Ananzi, South Africa’s pioneering search engine and online directory. Getting discovered meant understanding how sites were submitted, classified, described and presented inside a far smaller web. Search optimisation was less complex than it is today, but it still demanded care. A business needed the right structure, relevant wording and a clear relationship between what it offered and the searches people performed. We were there, learning those systems through practical client work rather than reading a retrospective account of them.

A guarantee backed by practical experience

In those early years, we guaranteed first-page Ananzi results. If we did not achieve the promised position, the client could receive their money back. When Google later became the dominant route to information, we continued applying the same performance-led philosophy and guaranteed first-page Google results too. The guarantee was not a slogan detached from delivery. It reflected an environment in which the important ranking variables were fewer, results were less personalised and an experienced team could influence outcomes with much greater predictability. For many years, our methods worked and the guarantee gave clients a clear, understandable measure of success.

Why responsible SEO had to change

Search did not stand still. Google became better at interpreting language, links, location, quality, authority and user intent. Results began varying according to the person, device, place and context behind a query. Competitors invested more heavily and entire industries became crowded. No SEO company controlled Google, and a universal first-page promise eventually stopped being an honest description of what an agency could guarantee. We retired the ranking guarantee because the ecosystem had changed, not because SEO had lost its value. Our responsibility shifted from promising a position to improving every controllable factor that can increase qualified organic visibility.

What effective SEO means today

Modern SEO begins with a website that can be crawled, rendered, understood and used easily. It requires sound technical implementation, meaningful architecture, fast pages, useful content, credible signals and accurate measurement. It also requires patience. Search performance is an accumulated outcome of many decisions rather than a switch that an agency turns on. We follow established best practices, investigate problems carefully and prioritise work according to likely business value. Rankings remain important, but they are interpreted alongside relevant traffic, enquiries, sales, visibility and the quality of the experience after someone lands on the site.

The next transition is already underway

People increasingly ask AI assistants complete questions instead of typing short phrases into a traditional results page. The interface is changing, yet the underlying need is familiar: systems must discover information, interpret it, assess whether it is credible and decide whether it deserves to be surfaced. A clear site, consistent facts, strong topical coverage and genuine authority therefore matter to both search engines and AI systems. Net Age is applying almost three decades of search experience to this new environment. We are not discarding SEO for a fashionable label; we are extending the same discipline into AI search, answer engines and machine-generated recommendations.

Experience that keeps moving forward

Longevity only matters when it produces better judgement. Our history includes Ananzi, the rise of Google, major algorithm changes, mobile search, local results, structured data, analytics and now generative AI. Every transition has reinforced the same principle: build for people, make information understandable to machines and avoid shortcuts that cannot survive the next improvement in technology. That is the journey documented in this series. Each article explores a stage or principle in greater depth, from the era of guaranteed rankings to the foundations businesses need for visibility today and tomorrow.

What this means for your business

Start with a website and visibility assessment that separates foundational problems from longer-term growth opportunities. The right programme may include architecture, technical corrections, content, measurement and AI-readiness, but it should always be shaped around the business rather than a generic package.
